This movie is actually very funny.the only problem is that if you come from USA or some other place you will never understand the South African humour in it.so if you are from the US then dont watch it.you wont get it.but if you are from South Africa.youll love it.i really loved this movie.because i am South African, it shows alot of things that happen in south africa and it really made me laugh, so i definitely recommend it to any South African who hasnt already seen it.if there are any South Africans who havnt seen it. This movie has been bad mouthed by many Americans and people in other countries simply because they just dont get it. So South Africans.Go watch it!! Of course there are those exceptions of people from other countries other than South Africa who have experienced South African life and who will enjoy it.
I thought the movie rock. What made it even better was to watch my kids aged 8 and 10 enjoy the film. Everything was kept simple and the good, clean humor, despite some crude jokes, was put in place in a way the whole family can enjoy. This movie has got a place in my collection.

I was disappointed in the overall rating but since some of the finer humor is hidden in cultural differences, it is understandable that some folks might not get the whole picture. And I have to say that it was masterly achieved. This is not a movie for the person wanting to see an 'intelligent, science fiction, documentary, love story' or the like.
It is pure entertainment. The author and actors and everybody involved is giving the most to entertain you, get you to laugh, wanting you to go out thinking, wanting to see it again. This type of film is also proof that South Africans is growing up, forgetting the past, the swear words of the 'apartheid' era and the like.
One of the worst swear words of that time was 'kaffer' or 'Caffer' referring to a person of the Negroid race. A child was referred to as a 'kaffertjie' sounding very much similar to 'Kavuki'!
I did not hear of any riots or protests at any venue where this movie was showing. To summerize, WELL DONE. It's refreshing to see an Afrikaans film being better and funnier than it's American counter-parts.
Mr Bones 2001 Full Movie
All Afrikaaners will be familiar with comedian Leon Schuster's work (particularly 'You must be Joking') and he plays his character with his usual gusto and madness. The film is hilarious, proving that a juvenile sense of humor doesn't have to be bad thing (especially during the toilet scene). It's a fantastic movie with a great cast, inevitably overwhelmed by Schuster. Obviously not everyone will be able to get the South African humor, or indeed, some of the stronger accents, and some could accuse the movie of going for cheap laughs and being unoriginal. But with a that said it still manages to blow most comedies out of the water.
And besides, what's wrong with recycling some jokes if you do them better than they ever were in the first play. Hopefully this will help gain the South African film industry some momentum, but if it doesn't, well then we still get a cool movie out of it!
One thing that appears to be a safe assumption is that this movie isn't made for Germans or Austrians, all others read on! As an American living in South Africa for the past two years, I probably have a bit more insight on the film than other foreigners, but I thought it was hilarious. I haven't laughed that hard at a movie since the slo-mo melon sequence in Ice Age. Anyone who likes Adam Sandler or any of the American Pie films would at least appreciate this movie, even if they don't get all the intricacies of the jokes (you know, like a 300lb pig flying through the air like a cruise missile).
Aside from shamelessly juvenile jokes, the film has a surprisingly tight story, and doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. The performances do the job, and all in all the movie's a riot. I had avoided seeing it for two years but recently caught it on DVD and was completely surprised. Easily makes 8/10, and is the best comedy I've seen in a long, long time. Bones at a 'Sneak Preview' where they have shown films such as 'Big Trouble', 'One Night at McCool's', 'Tomcats', 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' or 'The Animal' (with Rob Schneider) previously.
If you did enjoy some of the movies mentioned above - which I admit I did despite of the lousy ratings they have received, cauz they made me laugh - and life is just too serious outside the movies after all; and as long as you don't mind some elephants' excrements being shown, then your money and time is not wasted at all. Aside from the fun aspect - and without immersing to deep into the field of mass media theory: I found it quite remarkable, that this sort of movie would be made in the former apartheid-state South Africa: a white 'witch doctor', a black pro golfer.
Bones reminded me of the books by Tom Sharpe (who got kicked out of RSA while it still was an apartheid-state) which on the average get 8 out of 10 from me as well. Of course there are those exceptions of people from other countries other than South Africa who have experienced South African life and who will enjoy it. Bones may base mainly on so called 'toilet humor' and has a rough start.
Maybe for some of you this special kind of humor is too flat, but it's up to you to decide. In my opinion this movie plays with humor in a sympathetic, childlike and simple way that forces me to think that the scriptwriter was totally drunk (maybe something else.)!
I watched a lot of films lately, but none of them made me laugh as hard as this one. OK, if you want some pretentious entertainment this movie should not be your choice but for all other people: 'Ignore the story and ignore the dialogs! Just enjoy the scenery and the jokes and have a good time!' I watched this movie 3 times when I went for a holiday to Malawi (Africa) last summer (2003). I think it is one of the best comedies I have ever seen. The jokes in there are more than funny!! I laughed all the way.when one funny part finishes, another starts!
All you need to watch this hilarious movie is a ice cold coke and lots of popcorn!!!;) It is truly a movie that I would recommend to people of all ages! It would easily get 9/10, or maybe scrape in a 10!I'm going to try and get the movie on DVD. When my sister gave me this movie to watch, I just thought it would be 'just another manageable movie'. I was dead wrong! It was very, very funny. The plot was well laid.
One thing led to another and then another. It started with an oraclist that was a white man (Mr Bones). He had been lost in Africa and had been adopted by an African king. The king had no son and desperately needed one. Mr Bones was then sent to the 'sun city' to bring home the king's son that the oracle showed existed. Mr Bones arrived at the city and mistakenly assumed the king's son was Vince Lee (a superstar golf player) who happened to be at the city at that point in time. Mr Bones was pretty sure he was the prince because he was called 'the prince' by his fans.
Upon meeting Mr Bones, Vince Lee called him a 'bone head' and this made Mr Bones even more sure that this was indeed the prince since he already knew his name. All in all this movie was really a very enjoyable one. You never stop laughing throughout the movie. You've got to see this.
My Top 10 in comedies. Very funny movie, and easy to watch and laugh all time. Africa, golf, primitive with high-tech on very funny way. I own a DVD rental store, and recommending this one to everyone who wants a good comedy. So far, 80% of my customers were satisfied.
If you tired from watching stupid Teen comedies that are not funny, try this one for a change. You won't be disappointed. Watched myself this one 5-6 times, cause my wife adores it, and she play this one once a week:). Every time i found something different to laugh, and almost every time watching till end. This 'movie' is literally THE worst peace of junk I ever watched, this includes Tuesday night German soap reruns! This flick is just so crappy, you wouldn't believe it. It's basically about a medicine-man of a South African tribe, who gets sent on a quest to find the chief's alledged son.
That son has turned into a professional golfer and isn't quite aware of his royal descent - and as Mr. Bones shows up, he sincerely doubts everything the mad medicine-man tells him. Yadiyadiyah.and so on. So here's what I criticize about this flick: it's just flat out boring. That could be ok, if it was at least funny - it IS a comedy - but even that the movie doesn't accomplish! And here's why: all the jokes are about getting pooped on or pooping someone.
Oh.I forgot to mention the running gag of a little pig falling out of a plane, pooping while falling! I think you get the picture! So, in case your ever intend to rent this, think about what I said! Bones is probably one of the most enjoyable local made movies I have seen. It contains scenes and messages that only a South African will understand. Despite reference been made by a none South African living in the UK as it been poor with toilet humour, even without this the movie is a load of fun.
It contains a healthy dose of good South African actors, a colorful production and an overall message that portrays South African life and culture in general. All-in-all, its fun for the whole family and Leon Schuster best. This is your comment, you may delete or edit it. OK, so it's not Bob Newhart, more like Red Skelton. But I think you'll like it. The running jokes about poop were inexplicably funny. Your 10-year-old son will find them hilarious.
The roles are broadly written, almost stereotypical, but the acting isn't bad, the plot line is ingenious, the scenery is terrific, the slapstick inspired. I'm no student of cinema, but the craftsmanship in making the film looks pretty good to me. Camera work seemed quite good.
Your young daughters might get a complex about the movie's premise, or you might use the movie to talk with them about foolish preferences for male children around the world. A fine little movie, one that'll leave a smile on your face. One of the worst films I have ever seen!!!

It was like going for roof canal seven times and I still can't believe I watched the entire film. What a waste of my time, I think it would of been more productive to watch paint dry. It was slapstick comedy at it's worst, I don't think you can call it slapstick comedy, it's more like slapstick stupidity if you ask me.
The story was overshadowed by moronic humour and awful acting, what a waste of film. The best thing about the film really is that it ends and the credits are a lot more entertaining than the actual film. I still have nightmares about the film and I've learn't my lesson with watching films with the title Mr Bones. DON'T BOTHER WATCHING IT!!!
I totally agree. It is definitely the worst movie I have ever seen. When renting it together with a friend, we already feared that this movie might be a bit silly, but maybe funny in a trashy way.
While watching the movie you feel like a 13-year-old boy directed it: The jokes have been borrowed from Police Academy and old Burt Reynolds films (and I like Police Academy!), the story pieces have been 'inspired' by mediocre cliche that you have already seen thousands of times and the jokes are simply infantile. Most of the time you see a fat guy tumbling into faeces or you hear Mr.
Bones shouting 'My prince!' There is a 1-minute dialogue between the 'prince' and Mr. Bones that touches slightly pseudo-intelligent ground ('You have to believe in yourself' like stuff) and a ca. 3 minute laughable love story.
To sum it up: The girl falling in love with the prince, plays the role of a subservient woman, the fat guy tumbles into faeces, now and then there are some disgusting jokes regarding animals and Mr. Bones is shouting 'My prince!' 'That's a good choice. You won't stop laughing. You'll laugh so your stomach will ache' said the officer when he saw 'Mr Bones' DVD in my hands. And I had no reason to think opposite.
DVD starts advertising new Schuster candid camera work. Well, for a trailer you can't put long jokes, so that's probably why these new pieces looked so pale and superficial, I told myself, still waiting for movie to start. Yankee Zulu was not a masterpiece, but had its charms, and some really great scenes. And Mr Bones was supposed to be much better.
However, you must be careful who will you trust. For someone who grew up with Austin Powers, matured with Porky's and American Pie and finds Scary Movie to be the ultimate comedy, Mr Bones can be a top pleasure to watch. But the rest of us have problems to understand what took Schuster eight years to finish the script. If he had completed it in first year of work, it would probably be much better, because bowel humor was not so popular then, and I guess we would be free of few tons of feces missiles precisely targeting actors' faces. It is even more pity because the story isn't bad at all. Original - no, but comedy doesn't always ask for a brand new story; sometimes best scenes can be funny just because of similarity to something that everyone knows.
Schuster also didn't fall into usual trap to focus too much on confrontation of two worlds. These movies were popular in 80's (Starman, Crocodile Dundee, E.T., Coming to America) and, as usual, too many copies make jokes repeat.
Mr Bones contains few minutes of understandable misunderstandings, enough to stay unobtrusive (though one of them again concentrates on of body excretions, when he looks for toilette). And there is more logic in developing the plot than in many other modern movies, including Schuster's own ones.
Dialogues have never been Schuster's best side. In candid camera you can't plan them, so he sometimes neglects them in movies, too.
The number of characters is rather big but each of them has personality (one more step forward for Schuster). And, unlike Schuster (co)author, Schuster actor was equal to his best roles. Music is used a lot, and it seems to be one of Hollywood influences (but this one well done). Since Jamie Uys it seems that RSA movies made for foreign audience can't avoid a lot of animals.
They may be exotic and thus attractive to Europeans and Americans (though for most of them cows and ducks are equally exotic as leopards), so it can help selling the movie. However, in Mr Bones birds fly only to drop their bowel contains on human noses (when Mel Brooks made that it was original and was integrated in the story), not to mention bigger animals. If a medium size bird is supposed to make a big laugh every time it empties its intestines, imagine what an epic movie would be made if someone could get a pterodactyl! (Remember, we're in the age of bird influenza.) Apart from this type of humor (I use this word without believing in it), I noticed that the story, though settled in RSA (even some landscapes were the same or at least similar to Yankee Zulu), didn't show much about complicated relations between local races and nations as former Schuster's movies.
And all this golf players and the whole movie can't hold a candle to a single scene taking part on golf terrain in Schuster's 'Panic Mechanic'. But since then Schuster obviously became a victim of Hollywood bowel-humor influence. I hope that a cure will be found soon enough.
